Funeral services for Mr. Michael Thiel, 73 of Spirit Lake, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at First Christian Church in Spencer. Rev. Dan Mayes and Rev. Brian Thiel will officiate the service.
Visitation will be conducted beginning one hour prior to the service Friday at First Christian Church in Spencer.
Burial will be conducted at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
Military services will be conducted by the American Legion, Glen Pedersen Post No. 1 of Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been set up in Michael's name.
On Jan. 28, Dr. Michael Dean Thiel of Spirit Lake, Iowa died at the age of 73. He was born on Feb. 9, 1940 in Spencer, Iowa to Bryce and Ann Thiel. As a child he lived in Aurelia and Ames, Iowa and Kimball, Minn. He attended Minnesota Bible College, University of Minnesota, and earned a Doctorate of Ministry from Vanderbilt University.
He enjoyed 50 years of pastoral ministry in Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana and Kentucky. He also taught at the Minnesota Bible College, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Kentucky system. He served as Army Chaplain at Ft. Campbell, Kent.
In retirement, Thiel moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa where he enjoyed shooting pool, boating, motorcycling, Many Voices Choir, and Wii Bowling. He appreciated the support of his family and friends, including those from the Spirit Lake Senior Center and the Golden K Kiwanis.
Thiel is survived by daughter Heidi Thiel and partner Matthew Harris of Louisville, Ky.; son Michael Thiel II and his wife Lisa, granddaughters Syndney and Mia of Chandler, Ariz.; brother Brian Thiel of Leroy, Minn.; sister Meredith Fritz of W. St. Paul, Minn.; Aunt Lois Michelson of Spencer, Iowa; and good friend, Lois Christensen of Hartley, Iowa.
