John was born on May 28, 1952, and graduated from Akron High School in 1970. He then attended Minnesota Bible College where he received his A.A. (1972) and B.A. (1974) degrees. Following college, he attended Lincoln Christian Seminary, graduating with a Master of Divinity degree in 1978. He was youth minister for two years with the Church of Christ in Austin before moving to Rochester in 1981 with his former wife, Debra M. Orris (Harwick), and son, Steven John Orris.
John worked at Barlow's grocery store for a few years and began taking classes in computer sciences at Winona State College. He also worked at the Christian Book and Gift Store before being employed by Olmsted County in 1989. He retired after 25 years with the county in 2013 due to medical reasons.
While John had numerous things that he enjoyed doing, his favorites were reading books on philosophy and theology, visiting Olmsted County parks, maintaining the Friends of Oxbow website and newsletters and helping people with their computer problems.
A memorial service was held Friday at the Marion Church of Christ in Rochester, with a graveside service at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Rochester.
Memorial donations can be made to the family. After funeral expenses, donations will be made to Oxbow Park, which John loved and worked so hard for, and to Marion Church of Christ.
